Green Lake’s Kelsey Olmen Installs Little Free Library on Town Square Bike Garden

Kelsey paves the way by filling the newly installed Little Free Library with some of her own books in hopes that others may do the same.

Green Lake, WI—Green Lake High School student and Girl Scout Kelsey Olmen installed a little free library outside Town Square Community Center late September of 2018. This new community resource was part of Kelsey’s project for the Silver Award, the highest award for a Girl Scout cadet.

The little free library takes the shape of a small, red wooden box in the middle of Town Square’s bike garden. People of all ages may take a book without having to worry about any costs or overdue fees, and in return, individuals may leave a book for others to read.

After brainstorming different projects, Kelsey consulted with her advisor, Amy Pipho, who introduced her to the little library. “I like the idea of having libraries readily available for people,” said Kelsey. “It’s an unexpected way for people to read and turn away from their phones.”

“Kelsey has always been an avid reader,” said Kelsey’s mom, Jodi. “When you love reading as much as she does, it’s easy to share that passion.”

Town Square's Little Free Library is packed and ready for people to enjoy.

Kelsey recently bridged from Cadette to Senior. Seniors are encouraged  to create and lead activities for the younger Girl Scouts, and to take a leadership role in organizing and assisting with Council and service unit/association events and activities. Kelsey has plans to install another little free library outside the main entrance of her high school and register the libraries online so that they can be easily found online. The little free library at Town Square is located on 492 Hill St. in Downtown Green Lake.
