Rafael Salas to Offer a One-Time Life Drawing Workshop at Town Square

Renowned artist, published author, and art educator Rafael Francisco Salas will be at Town Square Community Center in Green Lake to share with participants figure drawing techniques in a one-day workshop titled “Drawing the Human Body: From the Old (and New) Masters” on Saturday, June 9, from 10 am to 1 pm. 
 
This workshop is open to all levels. It does not assume any prior experience or that one will become an artist, but it prepares all to do stronger work in fields that depend upon creative thinking. Participants can expect to learn historical and contemporary life drawing techniques practiced by the greats, using simple materials—pencils, charcoal and erasers—as means of discovery. The $50 registration fee will help offset the cost of hiring a live model and cover materials like artist tape, charcoal sticks, a charcoal pencil kit, and strathmore drawing paper.
 
“As a professor of Art at Ripon College, Salas has years of experience teaching drawing to all levels,” said Jorge Gutierrez of Green Lake Renewal, the non-profit organization that operates the Town Square community center. “This is a great opportunity for people to learn from one of Wisconsin’s most prominent artists of today.”
 
Rafael Francisco Salas is a Wisconsin based painter. He combines landscape, the legacy of Byzantine iconography, portraiture, architecture and country music into artwork that evokes a strange, rural poetry. It reflects a personal journey of mixed race identity, conflict, beauty and devotion played out on the vast landscapes of rural Wisconsin.
 
His work has been exhibited in New York City, San Diego, Boston, as well as many venues in the Midwest including The Neville Public Museum, The Museum of Wisconsin Art, The John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Dean Jensen gallery, Circa Gallery and Frank Juarez Gallery. His work is represented by Portrait Society Gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Salas is also a contributing writer at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and associate professor of art at Ripon College in Ripon, WI.
