Tai Chi

About the class

Instructor Jan Saecker will guide you through the practice of this gentle martial art to help improve strength and balance. No special clothing is needed, but comfortable shoes and socks are encouraged. A drop-in fee of $1 is directly payable to the instructor.

Jan Saecker injured a back muscle in 1970, and to cure it, learned long form Tai Chi from written descriptions of the motions. She then went to Philadelphia to stay with two people who had just returned from studying Tai Chi in China. Jan learned the art and taught Tai Chi at the Caestecker Public Library, the Markesan Public Library, the Princeton Public Library and in Ripon Memorial Hospital for therapy and nursing staff.

What is tai chi?

Originally developed for self-defense, tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing.

Who can do tai chi?

Tai chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. In fact, because tai chi is a low impact exercise, it may be especially suitable if you're an older adult who otherwise may not exercise.

You may also find tai chi appealing because it's inexpensive and requires no special equipment. You can do tai chi anywhere, including indoors or outside.
