Town Square Launches Major Preservation Initiative
Town Square Launches Major Preservation Initiative to Protect Historic Community Landmark
Exterior restoration and building improvements begin this August
Town Square Community Center is embarking on a significant preservation effort to ensure Green Lake's historic community gathering place continues serving residents and visitors for generations to come. Exterior restoration work on the 127-year-old former Green Lake County Courthouse will begin in August 2026, marking the first phase of a long-term preservation initiative.
Since acquiring the historic courthouse in 2012 and saving it from probable demolition, Town Square has transformed the building into one of Green Lake's busiest community hubs. More than 60,000 people visit Town Square each year to attend performances, educational programs, fitness classes, nonprofit events, civic meetings, art activities, and community celebrations.
While Town Square has flourished as a community center, the historic building has continued to age. Years of volunteer-led repairs and maintenance have helped keep the building operational, but a comprehensive assessment determined that significant structural work is now essential to preserve the building and protect its future.
In 2024, Town Square commissioned a Historic Structure Report with support from a grant from the Fuldner Historical Heritage Fund. Completed in 2025, the 128-page report evaluated every aspect of the National Register of Historic Places building and established priorities for future restoration. Since then, a team of local volunteers and experts has been working to develop a phased preservation plan.
"This building has been at the heart of Green Lake for more than a century," said Kris Anderson, Executive Director of Town Square Community Center. "It's where generations have gathered to celebrate, learn, connect, and create memories. We have a responsibility to preserve this remarkable place so it can continue serving our community for the next 100 years."
The first phase of work will focus on protecting the building's structural integrity, including masonry tuckpointing, cornice restoration, soffit and fascia repairs, exterior stairs, window repairs, attic improvements, and insulation. Future phases will address critical building systems, including heating, air conditioning, and life safety improvements.
Construction will begin with exterior work in August 2026 and continue in carefully planned phases through spring 2028. Town Square will remain open throughout the project whenever possible, with work scheduled to minimize disruption to programs and events. Visitors can expect to see lifts, contractors, equipment, and temporary adjustments to entrances during portions of the project.
"We know the construction activity will be noticeable," Anderson said. "We hope our community sees it for what it is—a visible investment in preserving one of Green Lake's most important community assets."
Town Square will provide regular updates throughout the project through its e-newsletter, website, and social media channels.
