“eBird Checklist Big Year”
Our guest presenter this month will be Jeff Baughman, who some of you may know from many of our Green Lake Bird Festival field trips at Sunnyside. Jeff has challenged himself to record as many eBird checklists as possible in 2023. Obviously, time is an essential factor, and retiring from teaching has allowed him a little more time to devote to this obsession.
He wrote: “What is the purpose? Why do I want to do this? First, I love to watch birds, and second, I like visiting old and new places to find them. Another goal is to look at species phenology and distributions locally -- within a 10-20 mile radius of my home in Fond du Lac County. We as birders tend to visit our favorite places because we know what to expect to find there. I’d also like to find a few new “favorite” places and routes.”
For his program, Jeff will be showing you a map of the places (sites) has visited, he will talk about strategies, and share photos of some of the birds he has seen so far in 2023.
Jeff has been an active birder since 1977, with a strong interest in field identification. Many will recognize him as being the co-chair (with Tom Schultz) of WSO’s field trip committee since 1987! He has also served as vice president and president of that organization.
Our second program of the evening will be a video called:
“Woodland of Wonder”
This will be the presentation of a new video about South Woods Park of Ripon, a beautiful nature preserve that perhaps many of you have visited. It’s truly a special place, with a long history, and it’s considered to be “Wisconsin’s First Preserve.”
The creator of the video is Brenda Hughes, and she will present it to the group and be available to answer questions about it.
