May Lobby Artist

This month, the Town Square Community Center Lobby Gallery invites visitors to step into a world where past and present meet through the intricate art of printmaking. Featuring work by Rachel Kmecheck of Modern Medieval Press, the May exhibition highlights handcrafted prints inspired by history, folklore, and traditional techniques.

Rooted in the rich visual language of medieval art, Kmecheck’s work draws on symbolism, ornamentation, and quiet storytelling often found in historical objects. Each piece reflects a thoughtful blend of old and new, combining hand-carved linocut and relief printing methods with modern tools to create work that feels both timeless and contemporary.

“I didn’t come to printmaking in a straight line,” Kmecheck shares. “The process of carving, inking, and pressing an image by hand pulled me in—not just for the outcome, but for the rhythm of it. It felt slower, more intentional, and more connected to something older than myself.”

Through Modern Medieval Press, Kmecheck creates prints, textiles, and decorative pieces designed to live in everyday spaces. Her work emphasizes craftsmanship and storytelling, offering pieces that bring a sense of depth, history, and atmosphere into the home.

At its core, the exhibition reflects a dedication to keeping heritage craft alive—not as something distant or preserved, but as something people can connect with and experience in their daily lives.

The exhibition is open to the public throughout May during regular business hours—Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.—at Town Square Community Center, 492 Hill Street in downtown Green Lake.
