Freeland Movie Matinee: The Territory
WHAT: Film Screening of The Territory
WHERE: The Ballroom at Town Square
492 Hill Street, Green Lake, WI
WHEN: Saturday, January 21, 1-3 pm
Freeland is excited to announce that it will be showing the film THE TERRITORY the weekend of January 20th. This fascinating documentary places audiences directly in the Amazon, using photography and film to showcase the natural beauty of the lush rainforest, contrasted with the bleak images of deforestation. The screening will be hosted Saturday, January 21st at 1:00 pm at the Green Lake Town Square Ballroom. This is an 83 minute documentary. This free event is open to the public of all ages. Our goal is to spark vital conversation around the showing of this film.
THE TERRITORY provides an immersive on-the-ground look at the tireless fight of the Indigenous Uru-eu-wau-wau people against the encroaching deforestation brought by farmers and illegal settlers in the Brazilian Amazon. With awe-inspiring cinematography showcasing the titular landscape and richly textured sound design, the film takes audiences deep into the Uru-eu-wau-wau community and provides unprecedented access to the farmers and settlers illegally burning and clearing the protected Indigenous land. Partially shot by the Uru-eu-wau-wau people, the film relies on vérité footage captured over three years as the community risks their lives to set up their own news media team in the hopes of exposing the truth. The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2022. Its festival run has included a number of award nominations and victories, including wins at Sundance and Telluride. Critics have praised its cinematography as well the authentic portrayal of tension between Indigenous peoples and settlers in contemporary Brazil.

Freeland Movie Night
Mark your calendar for the last Thursday of each month for “Movie Night” at Town Square. The “Jury Bar” and snacks will be served in the former, historic courtroom-cum-ballroom that seats up to 200 people. Movie Night is a partnership with Freeland, which has held the international Freeland Film Festival each year in Green Lake. Now the fest will expand into a monthly showing of a featured film at Town Square and on the virtual platform “Eventive”. The usual weekend fest, which was last held in Green Lake in September 2021 and Bangkok, Thailand in January 2022, will return soon too.
Freeland’s curated list of exciting films will start playing in September, while July and August’s showings will be a warm-up of “movies just for fun,”. The first monthly film on Thursday, July 28th will be the classic from 1986, “Top Gun” featuring Tom Cruise and a star-studded cast, and voted the top aviation film of all time. Who remembers the famous line "I feel the need, the need for speed."? With the annual EAA going on at this time, Town Square and Freeland thought this film would be appropriate with all the planes flying overhead.
In addition...Freeland will invite a real Top Gun to the event, Mark Webb, who has flown planes all his adult life to fight another kind of enemy: poachers. Webb, a former US Special Agent for the Fish and Wildlife Service, will join the crowd for a few moments before the show starts. He is also a serving wildlife protection instructor for Freeland. Doors open at 5:30 pm Film to begin at 6:30 pm. Tickets are $5.00 at the door. Come join the fun!

Town Square Tap Friday at the Square
Join us tonight for music by Jay Wildner and October Tree from 7:00 - 9:00pm.
In 1983, a teenager received his first guitar as a gift. By the end of the same day, he could play along with most songs on mainstream radio. After a fun run with the Madison-area rock band "The Exchange" from 1983 - 1988, he turned down an offer from a Chicago band for a "real" job and raising a family. After a 30+ year hiatus, he appeared publicly at the urging of a friend. Now, after only a year, he has been one of the accidentally busiest musicians in central WI, having played under the stage name "October Tree" at dozens of venues across the state.
October Tree plays an eclectic list of multi-genre covers and autobiographical originals ("Remembering/Everything", "Whenever", "Paradise", etc.) that connect with the listener through soaring, emotionally-expressive vocals and sassy strings presented in a remarkably rhythmic style with the utmost authenticity of just six strings and one voice. Come, relax and enjoy An Evening with October Tree!

Carol speaks Spanish. She has a degree in sociology with a minor in anthropology. She's been a social worker. A childcare worker. A retail worker. And a full-time mom. Oh, yes. And she cooks.
After growing up in Wooster, Ohio, and Kewaskum and West Bend, Wisconsin, and spending summers in Green Lake...and then living in Green Lake, and then Mexico and then Texas as an adult...Carol is thrilled to be back in Green Lake. It was here in Green Lake that she would swim, water ski and horseback ride as a kid. And it was here in Green that she purchased her family's cottage when her daughter was two and remodeled it into a year-round home. Now, it's here in Green Lake that Carol will launch the next phase of her career....as a real estate agent and, at Town Square, as a YOGA INSTRUCTOR!
Yoga with Carol Skivington
Town Square is happy to tell you “Yoga is Back with Carol Skivington!”. Thursday nights starting at 5:00pm.
Carol teaches from the hatha yoga tradition, and has studied and become certified through Wild Spirit Yoga in Tomball, Texas, with Jennifer Carmack.
Hatha yoga refers to a set of physical exercises (known as asanas or postures), and sequences of asanas, designed to align your skin, muscles, and bones. The postures are also designed to open the many channels of the body—especially the main channel, the spine—so that energy can flow freely. (yogajournal.com)
Carol’s classes incorporate breath work (pranayma), poses (asanas) and meditation with a goal of uniting strength and flexibility. Beginners as well as seasoned yoga students will feel comfortable in my classes. She teaches to all levels and she hopes that you leave her classes refreshed, revived, and more connected to your inner self!
Classes are located in Town Square Community Center’s Studio A (unless noted otherwise). Carol will offer a Zoom link to those who would prefer to do the class from the comfort of their home.
NOTE: All Town Square programs and events are subject to change.
