evening, October 10 th at 6pm called, “The AMAZING and Mesmerizing Ruby-throated
Hummingbird” which will cover an array of information from the natural history of
hummingbirds to their migration patterns and other interesting tidbits learned through banding
efforts. In addition, there will be plenty of discussion around feeding these specialized birds.
Learn about other “winter” hummingbirds you might encounter this time of year.
Plan to come listen to hummingbird expert Mickey O’Connor, who has been working as an
Avian Zookeeper for 26 years at the Milwaukee County Zoo. Prior to her work at the Zoo, she
worked as a wildlife rehabilitator for the Wisconsin Humane Society. She has been banding
songbirds since 1997 (starting at the Riveredge Nature Center) and banding hummingbirds
since 2014. On her days off, she enjoys birding and spending time outside gardening and
playing with her pugs. She was a former treasurer for the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology and
leads wonderful conservation trips to Central America.

Green Lake Bird and Nature Club Meeting
The Green Lake Bird and Nature Club
Tuesday, September 12
6 pm - 7:30 pm
Ballroom
The Green Lake Bird and Nature Club will resume their monthly meetings starting on Tuesday, September 12th at 6:00 PM with a HANDS-ON opener featuring LIVE SNAKES of many different kinds!! Learn to overcome your fears in a safe, controlled environment with one of the Fox Valley's most accomplished snake handlers.
Guest speakers Steve Keller, Carl Hogue and their team—all part of “The Traveling Snake Show” hope to change your fear of snakes to COMPLETE fascination. Presenting only non-poisonous specimens one at a time, Steve will give an explanation of their eating habits, habitat, and other interesting facts like how they have been rescued or adopted and how they came to be part of the traveling show.
"There's a lot of people out there that aren't afraid of (snakes) anymore because they met me." Keller likes to have fun and has a laid-back demeanor, but he’s serious about his message. He calls snakes the world’s most misunderstood creatures and wants to change that perception.
The snake show started when Steve and his son Ben were in Cub Scouts and brought their pet snake to a meeting, then later to a “lock-in” and soon after that, Steve decided to expand and offer the rescue of snakes and doing educational shows—now over 20 years and going strong. Carl started when he was Cub Master of son’s pack. At the first Pack Meeting, Steve and his snakes were booked as the event. Carl was afraid of snakes at that point, but it was hard to be hiding in the back when all the boys and their moms were handling the snakes. After a little "peer pressure" Carl gave in and found the snakes were enjoyable—he and his son Ryan have been helping Steve for over 15 years.
Steve is originally from Kaukauna and currently lives in Redgranite. Carl is originally from Boulder Junction and now lives in the Fox Valley. They are willing to travel almost anywhere throughout Wisconsin and bring their snake show to the public.
This program is suitable for all ages, so bring your kids, your grandkids and your camera for this fun show—it is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
Ordinarily, the Bird and Nature Club meets in the Club Room at the back of Town Square in downtown Green Lake at 492 Hill Street but due to the likelihood of a FULL HOUSE, this very special program will take place in the Ballroom on the second floor. The Green Lake Bird and Nature Club will be hosting a special presentation next Tuesday evening, April 11th at 6pm called, “GETTING TO KNOW HORICON MARSH” which covers an array of information from the history of the marsh, to its management and locations of its best watchable wildlife areas. Join WDNR Wildlife Educator Liz Herzmann, as she takes you on a 33,000-acre tour of Horicon Marsh.
Created by the glaciers, yet scarred by humans, this important wetland has been restored by conservationists who had the foresight to think about the future of this wetland. Despite the degradation, Horicon Marsh was listed as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1990 and is ONE of the BEST of THE BEST wetlands in the world. Though significantly changed, it is a true testament to the resiliency of nature when allowed to be preserved. Liz will also take us on a mock birding adventure to learn about some of the must-see bird areas of the marsh including the special “Horicon jargon” you might hear certain areas referred to.
Liz Herzmann has worked for the DNR as a wildlife educator at Horicon Marsh for more than 13 years. She is an avid birder and member of the Horicon Marsh Bird Club. She enjoys the opportunity to reach a variety of audiences and ages to share the amazing story and wildlife of Horicon Marsh. “eBird Checklist Big Year”
Our guest presenter this month will be Jeff Baughman, who some of you may know from many of our Green Lake Bird Festival field trips at Sunnyside. Jeff has challenged himself to record as many eBird checklists as possible in 2023. Obviously, time is an essential factor, and retiring from teaching has allowed him a little more time to devote to this obsession.
He wrote: “What is the purpose? Why do I want to do this? First, I love to watch birds, and second, I like visiting old and new places to find them. Another goal is to look at species phenology and distributions locally -- within a 10-20 mile radius of my home in Fond du Lac County. We as birders tend to visit our favorite places because we know what to expect to find there. I’d also like to find a few new “favorite” places and routes.”
For his program, Jeff will be showing you a map of the places (sites) has visited, he will talk about strategies, and share photos of some of the birds he has seen so far in 2023.
Jeff has been an active birder since 1977, with a strong interest in field identification. Many will recognize him as being the co-chair (with Tom Schultz) of WSO’s field trip committee since 1987! He has also served as vice president and president of that organization.
Our second program of the evening will be a video called:
“Woodland of Wonder”
This will be the presentation of a new video about South Woods Park of Ripon, a beautiful nature preserve that perhaps many of you have visited. It’s truly a special place, with a long history, and it’s considered to be “Wisconsin’s First Preserve.”
The creator of the video is Brenda Hughes, and she will present it to the group and be available to answer questions about it.
For more information, call President Tom Schultz at 920-960-1796.
Green Lake Bird and Nature Club Meeting
Memuna Khan, Professor at Ripon College presents….
Meet us in the Club Room at Town Square. Enter from the back of the building near the Mill Pond.
Our presentation on February 14 (Valentine's Day) will be about the effect House Wrens have on Eastern Bluebird and Tree Swallow populations. Memuna Khan, a biology professor at Ripon College will be speaking to us about her work using wren guards on Eastern Bluebird nest boxes. She and her students monitor quite a few nest boxes in our area, and she plans on sharing many interesting things that her research studies have shown.
Tiny Tyrants: Can we prevent House Wren predation on nest box trails?
House Wrens, a tiny bird with a big voice and big personality are known to destroy eggs of their nest box competitors, such as Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds. House Wren populations are increasing, and many nest box monitors face the disappointment of failed nests because of this House Wren behavior. Memuna and her students conducted field experiments to test whether wren guards, a device affixed 3 inches in front of the entrance hole, prevent House Wren egg predation. Come find out the results of this two-year study conducted in collaboration with the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin (BRAW).
The meeting is free and open to the public. The Green Lake Bird and Nature Club meets every second Tuesday of the month, from September through May.

David will share his journey in beer brewing, offer insights on the process and answer audience questions. And of course, there will be beer samples!
More information will be added as we get closer but please save the date.
Julia Meyers-Manor talks about Dog Empathy
If you’re a dog lover attend this educational talk regarding research on Dog Empathy. Julia Meyers-Manor says research shows that dogs respond with comfort to an individual who was crying whether that person was their owner or a complete stranger. The results suggest empathy for the person crying because this attention from the dog did not happen when the owner or stranger were laughing.
“Lending a helping paw: Dogs will aid their crying human” was written with Emily M. Sanford of John Hopkins University. It describes an experiment run by Meyers-Manor, wherein 34 sets of dogs and their owners were recruited. Each owner sat in a chair behind a clear door that the dog could easily push open. Half the people were assigned to cry loudly for help, and the other half were told to hum “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and say “help” in a calm voice.
An article co-written by Julia Meyers-Manor, Ripon College assistant professor of psychology, has garnered widespread attention nationally and internationally, including coverage from Time, NBC News, Inside Edition, the Daily Mail, The Conversation, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and numerous other print and broadcast outlets.
