Green Lake Bird and Nature Club Meeting

Memuna Khan, Professor at Ripon College presents….

Meet us in the Club Room at Town Square. Enter from the back of the building near the Mill Pond.

Our presentation on February 14 (Valentine's Day) will be about the effect House Wrens have on Eastern Bluebird and Tree Swallow populations.  Memuna Khan, a biology professor at Ripon College will be speaking to us about her work using wren guards on Eastern Bluebird nest boxes. She and her students monitor quite a few nest boxes in our area, and she plans on sharing many interesting things that her research studies have shown.

Tiny Tyrants: Can we prevent House Wren predation on nest box trails?

House Wrens, a tiny bird with a big voice and big personality are known to destroy eggs of their nest box competitors, such as Tree Swallows and Eastern Bluebirds. House Wren populations are increasing, and many nest box monitors face the disappointment of failed nests because of this House Wren behavior.  Memuna and her students conducted field experiments to test whether wren guards, a device affixed 3 inches in front of the entrance hole, prevent House Wren egg predation. Come find out the results of this two-year study conducted in collaboration with the Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin (BRAW).

The meeting is free and open to the public. The Green Lake Bird and Nature Club meets every second Tuesday of the month, from September through May.

For more information, call President Tom Schultz at 920-960-1796.
