Bird and Nature Club
Bird & Nature Club
Discover the fascinating world of one of Wisconsin’s most striking raptors at Town Square’s next Bird and Nature Club presentation. Janet and Amber Eschenbauch of Central Wisconsin Kestrel Research will share insights from over two decades of studying these colorful, compact falcons—from their nesting habits to the banding efforts that help track their populations across the Buena Vista Grasslands. With stories, photos, and a visit from their ambassador falcon “Goose,” this engaging program brings the science and beauty of kestrels to life.
The Green Lake Bird and Nature Club meets every second Tuesday of the month, from September through May. This meeting will take place in the Club Room at Town Square.
We welcome anyone with an interest in birds and nature to attend. Join their Facbeook Group for more information or call President Tom Schultz at 920-960-1796.

Woody Invasive Plants of Wisconsin: How to Identify and Control their Spread
Many invasive plant species like buckthorn, bittersweet and honeysuckles have become quite common in Wisconsin. These woody species pose BIG problems for native plants and forests and can be difficult to control. The hardworking Green Team volunteers who help with buckthorn/bittersweet removal on our Green Lake Conservancy properties every fall know all too well the labor-intensive and time-consuming work it requires to eradicate these invasives. They are so opportunistic and tough, popping up in city lots and country acres, leaving many people struggling with these troublesome plants.
Looking for solutions and new ideas?? Plan to attend the Green Lake Bird and Nature Club on Tuesday evening, October 8 at 6pm for a special presentation just in time for fall clean up! Guest speaker Erika Segerson-Mueller is an Invasive Plant Program Specialist on the Forest Health Team in the Division of Forestry for the Wisconsin DNR. She will show us what makes a plant INVASIVE, how to IDENTIFY common woody invasives, and where to start with CONTROLLING their spread. She creates outreach and educational materials for invasive plant species and the issues they pose, spends time working on invasive plants in the fields and works with Wisconsin’s Cooperative Invasive Species Management Areas (CISMAs).

October Tree - Live Music at the Tap
Join us tonight for music with Jay Wildner and October Tree from 7:00 - 9:00pm.
In 1983, a teenager received his first guitar as a gift. By the end of the same day, he could play along with most songs on mainstream radio. After a fun run with the Madison-area rock band "The Exchange" from 1983 - 1988, he turned down an offer from a Chicago band for a "real" job and raising a family. After a 30+ year hiatus, he appeared publicly at the urging of a friend. Now, after only a year, he has been one of the accidentally busiest musicians in central WI, having played under the stage name "October Tree" at dozens of venues across the state.
October Tree plays an eclectic list of multi-genre covers and autobiographical originals ("Remembering/Everything", "Whenever", "Paradise", etc.) that connect with the listener through soaring, emotionally-expressive vocals and sassy strings presented in a remarkably rhythmic style with the utmost authenticity of just six strings and one voice. Come, relax and enjoy An Evening with October Tree!

Birding Across Wisconsin – a June 2024 Tour
Wisconsin is a FABULOUS place to go birding, and this point was reinforced earlier in the summer, when a group of 10 birders from California “flew in” for an 8-day organized tour across our great state. The tour was led by Tom and Wendy Schultz, Jeff Baughman (who spoke to our club last year), and Jon Dunn, the primary author for the National Geographic’s Field Guide to the Birds of North America.
Over the course of the weeklong tour, Wisconsin leaders felt a sense of pride and satisfaction having the opportunity to “show-off” a good number of Wisconsin specialties the western birders hoped to add to their life lists, such as Sedge Wren, Red-headed Woodpecker, Upland Sandpiper and many of the “eastern” warblers. By the end of the week, the group observed a total of 167 bird species, which included 13 sparrows and 29 warblers. Additionally, and much to their appreciation (since California frequently suffers from dry conditions and fire) they truly enjoyed the many beautiful lush and green landscapes.
Please join us for a presentation about this Grand Wisconsin Birding Tour 2024 on Tuesday, September 10, starting at 5:00 PM. Please note that we’ll be meeting an hour earlier this month – with pizza as a way to welcome members to the start of a new season, and also to get people home on time for the presidential debate scheduled that same evening.
Bring an easy dessert or snack to share if you wish; beverages will be available for purchase.
This meeting will take place in the Club Room at Town Square, which is at the rear of the building, next to Town Square Tap.
The Green Lake Bird and Nature Club meets every second Tuesday of the month, from September through May. We welcome anyone with an interest in birds and nature to attend.
